Les Sables d’Olonne Agglomération : cycle parking facilities to encourage cycling to work

In the Sables d’Olonne Agglomération, cycle parking facilities are being expanded to make daily journeys easier and encourage staff to cycle to work. A secure ALTAO® Spacio shelter with 74 spaces and open ALTAO® Curve cycle shelters spread across nine sites provide staff with convenient places to park their bikes close to their workplace.
This initiative supports the growth of company bikes and the Sustainable Mobility Scheme. It will give staff more opportunities to incorporate cycling into their daily routines !
A secure cycle shelter to make commuting easier
To make it easier for staff to cycle to work, a 74-space ALTAO® Spacio communal cycle shelter has been installed for staff working in the city centre. Fitted with ALTAO® Parco racks and a Diwio badge-based access control system, it provides a dedicated space for secure bicycle parking throughout the working day.
Pierre Mauger Secondary School also has a covered courtyard with space for 56 bicycles, allowing pupils to leave their bikes sheltered from the weather.
Modular cycle shelters at nine locations across the urban area
To round off the parking facilities, ALTAO® Curve bike shelters have been installed at nine locations across the urban area, providing nearly a hundred additional cycle spaces!
Their modular design allows them to adapt to any environment: adjustable length, customisable number of panels, and the option to remove certain panels when the shelter is placed against a wall. This helps to optimise the available space whilst keeping installation costs under control.
This provides staff with a convenient place close to their workplace where they can park their bikes during the day and set off again at the end of the day.
Car parks to make cycling part of everyday life
From company bikes and the Sustainable Mobility Allowance to dedicated parking spaces, staff have a range of options available to them to prioritise cycling for their commutes. Standard bikes, e-bikes, folding bikes, longtail bikes, cargo bikes and many other models : cycling habits are becoming more diverse and parking needs are changing. With facilities directly accessible at their workplaces, parking their bikes is becoming easier on a day-to-day basis.
These improvements cater to cyclists’ changing needs and help to promote active travel in the Les Sables-d’Olonne Agglomération.
Equipment ordered via the CATP
The cycle parking facilities for the Les Sables-d’Olonne urban area were ordered via the CATP (Centrale d’Achat du Transport Public). This solution enables local authorities to streamline their procurement processes and save time.
A case study presented at the AGIR 2026 Conference
At the AGIR 2026 conference in Angers, Altinnova and Les Sables-d’Olonne Agglomération shared their experiences in relation to a key question: “From plan to reality : how can we promote cycling in the long term?”
This discussion provided an opportunity to review the various stages of the project : staff requirements, the choice of equipment and the roll-out of cycle parking facilities across several sites. It was a practical exchange aimed at highlighting the lessons learnt from this project and demonstrating the importance of solutions tailored to the specific uses and characteristics of each area.
